Much has been reported in the papers recently about the bingo industry being hit as a result of the anti smoking law in Britain. Things have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for big tax cuts to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However will the internet version of this classic game offer a escape, or will it never compare to its real life peer?
Bingo has been an familiar game usually played by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game of late had experienced a recent comeback in popularity with younger men and women opting to go to the bingo parlours instead of the clubs on a Friday night. This is all about to be reversed with the legislating of the anti smoking law around Britain.
No longer will enthusiasts be able to puff on cigarettes while marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public area will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most popular places where people like to smoke.
The effects of the smoking ban can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo parlours. Numbers have dropped and the business is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Certainly they haven’t abandoned this enduring game?
The answer is on the internet. Gamblers realize that they can bet on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a beer and smoke and still enjoy huge cash rewards. This is a recent development and has happened almost perfectly with the anti smoking law.
Of course betting on on the internet is unlikely to replace the social part of going over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of men and women the governing edicts have left a good many bingo enthusiasts with no option.
