A lot has been reported in the papers just a while ago about the bingo industry singing the blues as a consequence of the anti cigarette law in the United Kingdom. Conditions have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive aid to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. However does the web version of this classic game present a escape, or will it never compare to its bricks and mortar relative?
Bingo is an enduring game historically enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game of late had undergone a recent increase in popularity with younger people opting to visit the bingo parlors rather than the clubs on a Friday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the introduction of the anti smoking law across England and Wales.
Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes whilst marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 every public area will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favorite places where folks like to puff on cigarettes.
The effects of the anti cigarette law can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo parlours. Profits have dropped and the industry is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where did the players go? Of course they haven’t abandoned this age old game?
The answer is on the net. Gamblers realise that they can play bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a beer and cigarette and still have a chance at big jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course gambling on on the internet could never replace the collective aspect of going down to the bingo hall, but for a group of people the law has left a good many bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
